Advanced Design Elements and Principles

Instructor - Ben Needham
Teacher of Record - Cody Swanson

Course Objective:

The course will build upon the Design Elements and Principles first presented in the Into to Design course.  By using the principles and elements of design we will explore how they are utilized in everyday elements to manipulate the viewers perception and convey an idea, mood, emotion and story.   Students will complete a series of weekly projects that will help reinforce their understanding of the design elements.  Below is the link to the handout to refresh yourself with what the Elements and Principals are.

Each assignment should be submitted on Friday before the online class meeting (9am Jrs, 1pm Srs).  You will submit to the shared course folder on Google Drive.  Please submit EXACTLY as requested in each assignment (names/materials/etc...)

Assignment #1 - Elements and Principles Review

Using the link above take 7 original photos showing the 7 elements of design.  Take also 7 photos showing the principles of design.  You will turn in a total of 14 photos in the google drive folder for Assignment #1 in the folder with YOUR name on it.  Please name the files your name and the element/principle that you are presenting in the image.   For example the file name could be SophiaMadge_Repition.jpg (thanks Sophia for being the example).   See these examples for a sample of what I am looking for.   Please shoot these in/around your locations.  You do NOT need to go out in public to make this happen.   Practice your social distancing.  Be Creative.  Effort is as important as quality.  Take your time, focus the picture to best capture the element/principal you are presenting.

Assignment #2 - Trash Art

Using the design elements and principles I want you to choose a photo of a subject (Human, Animal, Pet, Creature)  Try to choose one subject.  If you want to do something outside of the guidelines ask first.  You will set up a sculpture of FOUND objects to try to best represent the subject in the photo for a specific vantage point.   The objects can be anything you come up with (Trash, Food, toys, Nature etc...)  I do not want you buying anything for this project.   This is meant to be an extensive project, please allow yourself 4-6 hours this week to complete.  If you finish in under three hours then you did not put enough effort in.  You will turn your reference photo as well as a photo of the completed sculpture from the intended POV  and also from a 2nd POV.

Below are some samples of professional artists who work in this medium.

Assignment #3 - Make Good Art

In 2012 Neil Gaiman gave a commencement Speech at the University of the Arts.  The theme of speech was "Make Good Art".  While a writer by trade, his ideas, examples, and themes are inspiring to all artists.  From students, to professionals, to people that just enjoy creating to create, the speech covers the creative process from success to failure.

This weeks assignment is to watch the 20 minute speech and take notes on it in preparation for a class discussion on Friday.  It is imperative that you watch the speech in it's entirety.  As many students struggle with how to take notes, this will be a chance for you to practice that skill.   The ONLY turn in this week for this class will be 1 to 2 pages of notes from the speech.   They can be handwritten (photo of them uploaded will be sufficient) or you can take them on a computer and upload a PDF!!!! of your notes.  Your note style is up to you.  Three samples are included below, feel free to emulate one of those formats or come up with one that works for you.   The important thing is that you have your notes complete and in order before the discussion.   If you do NOT have your notes complete and submitted before the discussion you will need to turn them in afterwards as well as a 2 page paper summarizing the speech.  The paper is ONLY for those who are not prepared for the class discussion on Friday.
